MJ

This is a little piece I did as a tribute to Michael Jackson. Just something I threw togeather while listening to him on Pandora.

Hair

Hair, It defines a persons face, it is the icecap on top of the mountain. It gives the head form, covering the bony structure beneath.

There is no reason, or possibly way, to draw each individual strand. How this stylization of hair was first formulated may stem from the work of Japanese wood block artists who were more interested in emulating the work of their masters and not in replicating reality.

This approach felt organic to me in the style and shapes.

A Victorian wig might give the same impression of chunky spirals cauterized with hairspray and rolling irons.

I vow to finish this triptych some day soon I just have not decided on the media to be used.

Cirque

the circus is in town, go down and see the clowns, eat cotton candy, throw water balloons. The elephants and the lions jump through rings of fire, tigers and bears wear silly costumes. All for our enter-tainment, the flying trapeze, vertigo and amazement.

This work is all about perception and depth. The poster may be nailed to the tree, but it is alive. The characters are not confined to a 2D world. The poster is merely a window into that world.

I have always wanted to see the Cirque Du Soleil. From what I have seen in internet previews their shows are visually stunning. This is a small tribute to them and the circus of my childhood; i.e. The Ringling Bros. If I am ever in the right town, with a wad of cash to spend, I'm sure I will catch a show.

the Sketch down

My name is Gavin

I want to share my art with you.

This December I graduated from college with a BS in Studio Art. At school I took classes from all different areas of study. I had an emphasis on graphic design, but never made it my main focus. Nothing really took president, except my sketchbook.

I would like to dedicate this blog to the art of my sketchbook, and studies leading up to my very first art show at the end of this summer in early fall.
